A very bad idea if u are comming from the US . An okay idea if you are from Far East.
For television sets , I recommend that you purchase them in India from a warranty and cost effectiveness purpose. India has almost all of the TV ranges available rest of the world. The transportation , haggling at custom’s and risks during transport and finally lack of warranty is simply not worth it.
$0.02
I think most TV signals are in PAL format which may not work with US made TVs that are NTSC only.
Usually TVs from Europe or Singapore may be better deal as they support PAL (and sometimes NTSC too)

TV questions have been discussed so well, so are many other India related questions.
I took Sharp LCD TV 42 inch in 2007 along with sea shipment so shipping was not a problem. I bought a worldwide compatible LCD TV from one of the 220 volt appliance websites in the US. That works on 110-200 volts as well as supports NTSC (US) and PAL (India) formats. It works great here so far, over 3 years old now.
Now a days In India, you get Sony LCDs at good price, and also Samsung, LG etc. Sharp does not have a major presence and may be overpriced here in India.
I preferred Sharp since a friend gave that higher reco than Sony or anyother brand at that time.
Using converter should be avoided as most appliances suffer damage one time or another with the 220v->100v converter. Electricity supply is too unpredictable to run sensitive appliances using converter, especially a TV that runs for hours together.
Anyway not sure if it helps. I have given you both good and bad news.
