What is the collective wisdom of the group about taking two laptops to India?
One of them would be for my personal use in India and the other one a gift for my sister.
1. Will I be asked to pay customs for the second laptop that I will leave behind?
2. Does it makes sense to buy a laptop here and take it or to buy one in India?
Do laptops bought here work out well in India in the heat/dust etc?

you can carry two laptops without any issues. i have carried two times and last year my friend carried two laptops
ensure you carry in hand baggage. there is no declaration required. i hope you will be carrying without the boxes
they do initial security check in. rarely they ask you about second laptop. even if they ask you can always tell one is your official laptop
and other is your personal laptop
You are eligible to take items worth 35000 Rs, if both the laptop cost < 35000 then no issues
Buying laptop here makes sense
Alternate Buy one here and buy other at customs notified shops at airport
As long as both of them are out of Box – it does not matter.
If you are too concerned, you can always check in one laptop and then take other one as carry on.
NO – You would not be asked to pay customs. As per Import/Export regulations – you can take goods upto 10000 USD.
Depending on which make/model you are planning to buy – will decide where to buy it from.
(Exclusive laptops – Mac/Sony Vaio’s/ Dell Vostro’s et al – I would recommend buying from US.
(Older configs – with dual core processors and older generations – you are better off buying in India)
LAPTOPS are same – no matter where you buy them. And no one uses the laptops out in fields – so do not worry about Dust and all.
We've taken 2 laptops through Hyderabad customs. After scanning the carry-on luggage, they noticed that we had 2 laptops but my wife was accompanying me at that time, so they allowed us to go without any penalty. They said they would allow 1 laptop per person. Hope this helps.
No, you won’t be asked to pay customs. 2 laptops are allowed. When asked, its better to say that one is your personal laptop and the other is for your official use. I have done that couple of times, and they allowed me.
Laptops bought here work well in India. I’ve so far gifted 3 laptops to my family members. Have tried HP, Lenov and Dell – all of them work fine at India. Haven’t tried sending Mac yet..
I have taken 2 laptops twice and never had a problem with customs (had both of them in the same back bag). It does work well in India and much cheaper here.
This explains the allowance as per law, but there are exceptions too which others might have experienced and can suggest.

Sometimes they will do some documentation but most of the times they are OK. I carried 2 laptops as gifts and 1 as official and they just deemed it too be too little to tax.
